“Messing With the Wrong Squeal”

Dytch66 set out to create something truly animated—something that felt like it was jumping off the wall. From the beginning, he envisioned a playful yet intense cat-and-dog standoff, full of energy and motion. The concept centers around a gray square anchoring the scene, acting almost like a stage for the action to unfold. The characters are feisty and expressive, with the dog clearly messing with the wrong squeal. There’s tension, humor, and personality all wrapped into a single moment.

What mattered most was that the story wasn’t just seen—it was experienced. The mural was designed to unfold as viewers move past it, allowing the narrative to reveal itself through the viewer’s own journey. Each angle offers a slightly different moment, inviting people to slow down, look again, and discover new details they may have missed the first time.

Equally important was how the mural fit into its environment. Dytch66 was intentional about using colors that belonged in the space—tones that complemented the surroundings rather than overpowering them. The goal was to complete the wall, not dominate it. About three-quarters of the way through the mural, the wall turns a corner, and that transition became a key design challenge. Instead of fighting it, he chose to hide the turn visually, creating a seamless flow so the artwork feels continuous and natural, almost as if the wall itself disappears.

The result is a mural that draws you in. You feel compelled to stop, to take it in, and then to come back again. Each visit offers a new perspective, a different interpretation, or a fresh detail that deepens the story. As Dytch66 puts it, the work is meant to captivate—something that rewards repeated viewing rather than revealing everything all at once.

As artists who run our own mural company, this project meant more to us than just another wall. It represents why we love working with small businesses and becoming part of their stories. A mural can give a storefront that extra spark—catching the eye of new customers while reminding loyal locals how much a business values its place in the neighborhood.

Mountain Paws is a perfect example of that spirit. This boutique shop in Idyllwild offers a wide variety of dog treats and supplies, along with special orders for locals. No matter your dog’s size or needs, Mountain Paws provides thoughtful, community-centered care—and we were honored to help reflect that energy on their wall.
